Four Meeting Objectives:
- Conference Board of Canada’s Employability Skills & Our Evolving ILO Rubric
- Review Current Literature on Learning Outcomes and Their Measurement
- Theory vs Reality and the 5 Weeks Ahead

Conference Board of Canada’s Employability Skills & Our Evolving ILO Rubric
L.Pegg had cumulated our work from the previous meeting where we took the Fundamental, Personal Management, and Teamwork Skills  as defined by the Conference Board of Canada in their Employability Skills 2000+ and matched them to our 5 Institutional Learning Outcomes: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Continuous Learning, and Responsible Citizenship.   This document will be important to us when we communicate with employers of Mohawk Graduates.  Conference Board of Canada & Mohawk's ILOs   Version 4 of our Evolving ILO Rubric

Mapping Achievement Standards of the CCR to the ILOs
C. Ozols described her process in linking the new co-curricular record project to our ILOs. CCR and ILOs

Review Current Literature on Learning Outcomes and Their Measuremen
t
Copies of the 2013 Canadian collection of essays:"Measuring the Value of a Post-secondary Education" by Ken Norrie and Catharine Lennon have been distributed to all team members. e-copies of this title are not available and photocopies could not be made under the College's ACCESS Copyright Agreement.
Team members will analyze and discuss chapters 4 and 9 at our November 4th meeting:
“The Value of Learning Outcomes: A Canadian Perspective” by Virginia Hatchette
“Gauging Impact: Connecting Student Assessment –as-Learning with Programs and Institutional Assessment “by Jeana M. Albromeit

Theory vs. Reality and the 5 Weeks Ahead

Team members, working in pairs, will lead discussions on the following topics at our forthcoming meetings:

Concluding Observation and Discussion Point:
K. Zhao noted that we need to include the concept of respect  or a respectful environment into our discussions.  P. French noted that the & Principles of Instructional Design insure that respectful learning environments are created. S. Estok and P. MacDonald will want to consider this as an "Institutional Support" for the ILOs.

No Academic Plan Project Team Meetings will be held during the Fall 2013 Reading Week. Team Members are encouraged to attend AODA Training Sessions on October 21, 22, or 23;attend the McMaster University hosted College to University Success Conference   on October 23;as well as participate in the CTL sponsored Inspiring Minds Conference on Eportfolios on October 24.

Thanksgiving Monday Holiday
The Institutional Learning Outcomes Team did not meet on
Monday October 14, 2013.

 Planned Meeting Outcomes
  • Review team member satisfaction with Meeting 1 (Survey Monkey Poll results)
  • Create a structure/template for the ILO rubrics
  • Consider how progression in academics will be measured.
  • Consider how participation in extracurricular activities will be measured
  • Consider how employer evaluations from experiential learning will be measured
  • Consider how physical resources ( athletic facilities, libraries, residence) and services (health, counseling, security) will be measured
  • Consider how data gathered from student surveys (KPI, Feedback on Teaching, Student Engagement) will measure the ILOs.
Structure/template for the ILO rubrics
We will use the Revised 2000 edition of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning Objectives.
We will organize the rows and columns in the same way as the rubric module is organized in our LMS:eLearn.
Measurement will be difficult (recurring theme)

Academics
Team reviewed work done by team members on creating rubrics for: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, lifelong learning and responsible global citizenship.
Programs of Study will need to be mapped to the ILOs
New programs should be developed with the ILOs in mind.
Annual and 5-year Reviews of Programs should link to the ILOs.
The top three levels of Bloom’s should be the focus of what a Mohawk Graduate can demonstrate.  Analyze – Evaluate - Create.

Extracurricular Activities/Service Learning/On-campus and Off-campus
We believe that Co-curricular Record (CCR) Project could work well on a ranking/rating scale instead of a evaluative rubric.
C. Ozols will be our liason with the CCR project and bring an update to Meeting No. 3.

Experiential Learning
M. Thomson gave us summary of the 14 evaluation factors employers use to evaluate our students: once at the five week mark and again at the end of their co-op experience.
1. initiative at work
2. interest in work
3. ability to plan
4. ability to learn
5. quality of work
6. quantity of work
7. judgement
8. dependability
9. personal relationship
10. feedback: acceptance of suggestions and criticisms
11. technical skill
12. written and verbal | communication skills
13. reliability and attendance
14. overall performance

Physical Resources
Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education
 P. MacDonald and S. Estok will identify college resources that are necessary to support the achievement of the ILOs by students.  They will investigate if such a survey/annual report already exists.

Student Surveys
K.Zhao and C. Del Conte presented a timeline of the delivery of all student survey instruments.  They will give a more detailed presentation on survey questions that relate to our ILOs.

Next Meeting:
C. Williamson: Will update us on access to leading edge research on learning outcome measurement.
P. French & V. Parke : Will present a Working Draft of the ILO Rubrics (Paper copy for each member)  based on Meeting No. 2 discussions.
K. Zhao & C. Del Conte: Will present on Student Survey Questions that support ILOs.
C. Ozols: Will present on alignment of CCR Project to ILOs.
P. MacDonald & S. Estok: Will give a preliminary report of their findings on methods of measuring how an institution supports learning outcomes via libraries, health clinics, counseling…

Summary of Discussions

We will focus on “The Whole Student” and give equal consideration to the ILOs being demonstrated in:
  • Academics
  • Co-curricular Activities
  • Experiential Learning

Academics:
EE, GE, and VS will need to be evaluated to determine their links to the ILOs in each semester.
Capstone Course/Capstone Projects will need to be evaluated as they are a recognized method of assessing the achievement of program and institutional learning outcomes.  Implementation could begin with the development of new programs i.e. Retail Pharmacy (Winter 2015).  Professional development will be needed to support faculty and student advisors in the implementation and assessment of ILOs at each semester level of students’ learning.

Co-curricular Activities:
Activities done on campus and off campus will need to be included.  Responsible Global Citizens – requires that activities beyond the physical boundaries of the college be recognized.

Experiential Learning:
All will need to be evaluated -
Co-op
Placements

Clinicals
Internships
Paid Part/Full Time Work

Alignment of Capstone Courses/Projects, Experiential Learning Activities, Exit Assessments are all  culminating demonstrations of ILOs.  Programs would determine which is best for their students.
